A coalition of more than a dozen business groups today sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo asking that he drop his proposal to extend a surcharge on utility assessments for five years.

The proposal, part of Cuomo’s $142.6 billion spending plan, would extend the surcharge for an additional five years.

Earlier today Senate Republicans called on Cuomo to drop the extension from his budget, with Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos calling the move a tax increase.

Cuomo has worked well with the business community over the last two years, winning support from many of the groups in the letter.

Keeping the tax extension for the 2013-14 fiscal year would mean an additional $236 million in revenue.
