On Long Island today to deliver a local version of his State of the State address, Gov. Andrew Cuomo sidestepped questions over whether he would endorse in the Nassau County executive race that’s been shaken up with the candidacy of Democrat Tom Suozzi who is looking to reclaim the job.

Retired Wall Street trader Adam Haber is the other announced Democratic candidate in the race, while North Hempstead town Supervisor John Kaiman is exploring a run.

The incumbent is Republican Ed Mangano who defeated Suozzi, once considered a rising Democratic star, nearly four years ago.

But Cuomo, who has worked with Mangano in the wake of heavy damage from Superstorm Sandy, said he’s trying to stay out of political considerations for now.

“Oh, it’s a long time. I’m going to stay out of the politics for quite a while,” Cuomo told reporters in a question-and-answer session. “We have a lot of government work to do here. We have a lot of rebuilding on Hurricane Sandy. I’m working with Democrats, I’m working with Republicans.”

Cuomo said that once he enters “political games, the people suffer.”

Asked if Kaiman was his preferred candidate in the race, Cuomo again demurred, but didn’t deny.

“There will be plenty of time for politics when we enter the political silly season,” he said.
