House Task Force: Focus On ‘Military-Style Assault Weapons’
As a Texas-based man names a, 30-round “Wiki weapon” magazine after Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a task force of Democratic lawmakers in Washington today released a report that recommends a new ban on “military-style” assault weapons.
A member of the task force is Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, whose husband was killed and her son wounded in a 1993 mass shooting on the Long Island Rail Road.
“When 20 kids are gunned down in their classrooms and over 30 Americans are killed with guns every day, to do nothing in response is to fail the American people. We’ve thoroughly researched and presented a range of options, each of which can help save lives and reduce injuries, and many of which have been proposed by others as well. It’s long past the time for Washington to finally act,” she said in a statement.
The report recommends that the federal government re-instate the expired assault weapons ban of 2004, require background checks for all gun sales, and strengthen the Nationl Instant Criminal Background Check System’s database.
There’s also recommendations to prevent gun trafficking and so-called “straw-purchasing” along with provisions to treat mental illness.
Cuomo pushed through the first post-Sandy Hook gun control law in January that expands New York’s current assault weapons ban, along with reducing the number of rounds in a high-capacity magazine. The legislation also included provisions to curb criminal activities with illegal guns that Senate Republicans had sought.
