Miner Responds To Report She’s Stepping Down From State Chair Post (Updated)
Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner this afternoon released a statement to our YNN Syracuse colleagues responding to Ken Lovett’s report in The Daily News today that she was considering resigning of her post as state Democratic Party co-chairwoman.
Miner, who has been critical of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s pension smoothing proposal in his $142.6 billion budget and called on the state Legislature to reject it, does not give an indication as to what her future plans are on the political side of things.
Update: The Syracuse team confirms that Miner also has said today she wn’t resign.1
“I have no plans on resigning,” Miner said.
Her full statement:
“I respect Governor Cuomo and his leadership. He has successfully advocated for a litany of issues in his time as New York’s chief executive and I appreciate those efforts. The fiscal plight of our municipalities is another where Governor Cuomo can showcase his strong leadership for the benefit of New Yorkers.
“By the measure of the Governor’s own budget division, 437 local governments are defined as ‘distressed.’ This is not an acceptable situation for mayors, supervisors, and county executives across our state. We need the Governor to convene the leaders of municipal governments, unions, businesses, the Comptroller, the legislature, and other relevant parties together to discuss real solutions to the crisis facing the City of Syracuse and municipal governments across New York State.”
Miner has said in interviews that she doesn’t seen any conflict with her criticism of Cuomo’s pension plan — which would allow local governments to lock in stable pension rates now against future savings — and her job as the governor’s hand-picked party co-chairwoman.
