Syracuse Mayor Miner on Pension Smoothing Debate
Both sides are digging in their heels in the fight over Governor Cuomo’s pension smoothing proposal.
Cuomo’s plan would let municipalities lower their pension costs now in exchange for paying more later. He says it’s a way for them to take advantage now of future savings from the new sixth pension tier created last year.
But critics says it’s just pushing financial problems down the road. Those critics are being led by Stephanie Miner, the mayor of Syracuse and Cuomo’s hand-picked co-chair of the state Democratic Party.
Miner upped the ante in her very public battle with Cuomo via a no-holds-barred OpEd in the New York Times. She explains her motivation behind this move.
