Labor has been a little put out about this convention here in Charlotte, with some union leaders boycotting the event altogether and withholding cash thanks to the selection – for the second time in a row – of a right-to-work state to play host to the Democratic confab.

With that as a backdrop, the New York Democrats are stressing how much they appreciate their hometown unions, making them the focus of their first delegation breakfast at the Doubletree – it was Labor Day, after all – and throwing them a party last night at StrikeCity, a bowling-centric entertainment center.

According to the invite, the party was thrown to “honor our brothers and sisters in labor.”

An attendee at the StrikeCity party texted me a photo of one of the gifts handed out to revelers: A “We (Heart) NY” hat that riffed off the iconic 1970s-era marketing campaign.

The only problem: The hats were made in Cambodia. “It’s really insulting,” my source fumed. “There are dozens of union-made – at least made-in-USA – hat manufacturers.”

Kind of a big oversight for whoever was responsible for putting this party together.

Making sure everything is union made – from signs to tchotkes – is definitely on the “Top 10 Things to Remember” list for Democratic event planners.
